Delea Shand

Delea is dedicated to performing and supporting new music. Having spent many years studying classical music and opera, it wasn’t until she joined an Experimental Improvisation Ensemble, at the University of Manitoba, that she realized how thrilling it was to work with living composers. Although she still enjoys singing classical music, what she really loves is working collaboratively with composers and creating new works.

She was recently a fellow at the Bang on a Can summer festival at MassMoca, Massachusetts. She also attended the Contemporary Opera Lab, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Delea’s contemporary repertoire includes chamber and solo works by composers such as: Berio, Cage, Crumb, Schoenberg, Weir, Boulez, Davidovsky, Frank, Wolfe, Berg, Knussen, Saariaho and Vivier. Opera and musical theatre roles include: Papagena, Die Zauberflote; Nicolette, The Love for Three Oranges; Lisa, The Grand Duke; Kate,The Pirates of Penzance; Kate, Kiss Me Kate.

Delea is currently completing her Masters in Contemporary Performance at the Manhattan School of Music. She has a BA in English and Drama from the University of Calgary; a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Music, from the University of Manitoba; and a Post Graduate Diploma in Music, from Trinity College of Music, in London, England. She lives in Manhattan and enjoys cooking and going to the theatre with her husband Gus.
