The Burren247 Elm StSomerville, MA02144 Map

I Am What I Am: An Exploration of Identity through Music

Opera on Tap returns to residence at the Burren Somerville for a series empowering all voices in classical music. I Am What I Am (title taken from the famous song of the same name from La Cage aux Folles) is a celebration & exploration of identity through music.

I Am What I Am: An Exploration of Identity was conceived to create a safe space for artists & audiences alike to celebrate underrepresented voices & identities in the musical canon. Opera on Tap Boston recognizes the enormous font of talent within our communities & aims to present programming that is both inclusive & reflects the diverse experiences of its members on & off-stage. Each artist involved in this project was asked to choose music that has helped them find their way toward embracing their identity regardless of gender, genre, or voice type. In this intimate exploration of personal identity through song, we are excited to share a varied & thought-provoking program celebrating the individuality of our artists & audiences. From drag performances, to classical singers belting theatre & scatting jazz, to personal anecdotes & more, we are excited to invite & include audiences to share in this unique concert experience with Opera on Tap!

Nasty Women of Opera

Nasty Women of Opera

Mar 25, 6:30pm - Mar 25, 8:00pm

The Burren247 Elm StSomerville, MA02144 Map

Opera on Tap has put together a powerhouse line up celebrating female characters, composers, and performers to raise money and awareness for the Nasty Women movement.

Generous donations you drop into our horned helmets will go to Strong Women Strong Girls, which shores up strength in girls from under-resourced communities by surrounding them with a community of strong women.

Put on your best pantsuit and pussy hat and join us at The Burren on March 25 for an afternoon of epic music paying homage to the powerful women of opera. From Valkyrie warriors to powerful queens, we will prove once and for all that women in opera aren’t just shrinking violets and swooning ingenues. All are welcome, as our female AND male singers show us what feminism sounds like, with superhuman vocal feats that will include oft-overlooked works by female composers. The only thing anyone will be grabbing is a cold beer served up by the friendly Burren staff.
