Opera on Tap at Brewability - The Bard at the Bar Featuring Shakesbeer!

“If music be the food of love, play on!” -Twelfth Night, William Shakespeare

Across the centuries, William Shakespeare has inspired composers to write captivating music, from opera to art song and more. Entranced by that whole package, we’re partnering with The Wit’s Shakesbeer in April to bring you a night of comic and tragic words and song, all to celebrate Will’s 460th birthday!

A collective of artists and vagabonds gathered by their love of all things theatrical and alcoholic, The Wit’s Shakesbeer plies their joyful stagecraft while honoring the longstanding tradition of drinking on, off, and all around the stage—with hilarious results. It’s a perfect pairing with Opera On Tap’s goal of sharing opera in bars, don’t you think?

So, come make merry with us—for as the Bard himself said in A Winter’s Tale, “A merry heart goes all the day…”

Sadness, Anger, Disgust, Fear, Anxiety, Envy, and of course, Joy…

As reflected in Pixar’s Inside Out, these are just a few of the emotions that color our days. Because May is Mental Health Awareness Month, our show at Brewability this month brings you the range of emotions expressed through opera.

As even Jung recognized, our favorite stories reflect the deepest levels of the human experience, where fictional characters have multidimensional thoughts, feelings, and even undiagnosed conditions. Like us, they’re navigating the path of their own universe, and through their journeys, they can sometimes help us understand our own emotions—and maybe even begin to destigmatize mental health challenges.

So, join us as we share these emotional expressions and laugh and cry with us to celebrate the broad spectrum of what it means to feel like a human

June is Pride Month and we are doing Opera in Drag!

 

What does this mean? Well, it means our singers—gay, straight, male- or female-identifying, and everyone in between—will dress as and interpret their repertoire through the eyes and voices of a gender identity apart from their own.

 

How would “Glitter and be Gay” from Candide be interpreted differently if sung by a straight man? Would a lesbian sing “La donna è Mobile” from L’elisir d’amore differently? Imagine the possibilities for a gender non binary individual singing “Madamina” from Don Giovanni!

 

Come experiment and learn with us as we examine gender roles through opera and have A LOT OF FUN.

What is art for? To amuse and divert, or to reflect the watcher back upon themselves in order to learn something? Or is it both?

 

 

Pitting Puccini’s style against the other most popular style in Europe, especially in Germany and Austria, Operetta, you will laugh, you will cry, and you will decide who wins the night! The final unrehearsed opera chorus will be decided by who wins!

Come with us to find out as we explore the line between good and evil through the lens of Disney and other fairy tale music. We also encourage you to dress up as your favorite fairy tale or Disney character, if you want to—we surely will!

When we say Oktoberfest, what comes to mind? Beer, of course!

This year, we’re joining LUKI to celebrate Oktoberfest on National Drink Beer Day and sing some German tunes for you! But why Oktoberfest in September? Good question—we’re glad you asked!

The original Munich festival was established to celebrate the October 10, 1810 marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig I to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghause. However, as early as 1828, festival goers were complaining about Germany’s October weather. So, the festival was moved to September, while retaining the name of month in which it was created. And hey—it’s appropriate! Our beautiful Colorado September weather should definitely live up to the German standards!

Regardless, we’re ready to have some fun—and lots of good beer at LUKI!
